CDE stands for Career Development Events. CDE give FFA Members an opportunity to compete in many different agriculture areas against other FFA Members in our region, state, and nation. CDEs help members learn more about a given topic and compete. State winners of most contest will win a trip to Indianapolis, Indiana to compete in the National CDE. The following are the CDEs that Laurens FFA plans to compete in during the upcoming school year. The following are powerpoints that will assist in preparing for the Wildlife CDE wildlifeppt updated 08 Forestry CDE/ Woodlands Clinic Fall CDE/ Late Spring Helps FFA Members learn more about the forestry industry. Three to four team members will work together to compete. FFA Members will have to: Identify trees Identify tools and uses Only team activity: Measure diameter at breast height and merchantable height of trees or Timber Management Evaluation for Thinning Exercise Use a compass to determine direction and pace distance of a course Answer 50 question test (only for Forestry CDE) See the following to help prepare for the Forestry CDE/Woodlands Clinic: Horse Judging CDE Fall CDE FFA member will have an opportunity to judge a wide variety of in hand classes and performance classes. Three to four members compete as a team. FFA Members will have to: Individual activity: Judge 4 horse best to worst (4 to 6 classes of in hand; examples could include Quarter Horses, Arabian, Hunter in Hand, or Paints ) Individual activity: Judge 4 horses performance best to worst ( 3 to 5 classes; examples could include Reining, Western Pleasure, or English Pleasure) Individual activity: 2 sets of reasons, 1 halter and 1 performance Team activity: Identify horse feeds, tack, parts of a horse, and breeds Team activity: Industry Scenario and presentation See the following for more information: The following website has information related to horse judging as well as feed identification: Tool Identification Early Spring CDE Three to four team members will compete together to identify commonly used agriculture tools that are 9th or 10th graders and in their first year in FFA. FFA Members will have to: Individually identify commonly used agriculture tools Individually answer a test related to the use of some agriculture tools See the following to help prepare for the Tool Identification CDE: Tractor Operation and Safety CDE Early Spring CDE Three to four team members will compete together too safely and accurately operate a tractor through a course. FFA Members will have to: Individuals will judge 4 market steers best to worst Individuals will judge 4 beef heifers best to worst Individuals will judge 4 market swine best to worst Individuals will judge 4 market lambs best to worst Individuals will present 2 reasons, 1 swine, 1 beef heifers or steers Individuals will determine to keep or cull a class of 6 to 8 heifers and a class of 6 to 8 sows (possibly EPA information will be used in these classes) Individuals will grade a class of each of the following: market steers, market swine, and feeder cattle See the following for further information: Judging Assistance: http://www.ca.uky.edu/agripedia/Agmania/ Dairy CDE Late Spring CDE Three to four team members compete as a team. FFA Members will compete in the following areas: Individuals will complete a 50 question test related to dairy industry and pedigrees Individuals will judge 5 to 6 classes of Dairy Cows and heifers of various breeds (From the following breeds:Holstein, Jersey, Guernsey, and Brown Swiss) Individual will present 2 sets of reasons on two cow classes Team activity: Use DHI Sheets to answer questions related to dairy herds See the following for further information: Prepared Public Speaking CDE Spring CDE Individual competition FFA Member will compose a written essay related to an Agriculture topic. The essay must have a work cited pages and be long enough to speak for 6 to 8 minutes. Judges then have 5 minutes to answer questions. Participant should bring 4 copies of typewritten manuscripts to the competition. See the following for further information Prepared Score Sheet Extemporaneous Public Speaking CDE Spring CDE during Public Speaking CDE Individual competition FFA Members will draw three or four topics that are related to the following categories: Agriscience and Technology Agrimarketing and International Relations Urban Agriculture Food and Fiber Systems From the three to four topics the participant will choose one topic to use in speech. Participant will have 30 minutes to prepare the speech. Participant may put outline of speech on index cards. Speech must be 4 to 6 minutes long. Judges then have 5 minutes to ask the participant questions Extemporaneous Score Sheet Poultry CDE CDE at State Convention Team will consist of three to four team members. Event will consist of the following activities: Selection of the four best past production hens from a class of eight birds (50 points) Oral reasons on the selection of four hens from a class of eight birds (50 points) Placing of four further-processed poultry meat products (pre-cooked, breaded chicken patties and tenders) (50 points) Placing for four one-dozen cartons of chicken eggs (50 points) Ten parts of identification (50 points) Ten eggs for interior quality (50 points) Ten chicken carcasses for quality grading (50 points) Complete a written, multiple choice test consisting of twenty-five questions from the following areas: anatomy and physiology, house management, poultry marketing, and disease prevention (50 points) The following is a great websites to use for practice Greenhand Knowledge Bowl CDE CDE at State Convention Only 9th or 10th graders that are in their first year of FFA can compete. 4 member team. Each team member will complete a 100 question test in round one. The top 2 teams in round one move to round 2. Round 2 consist of team members answering questions in a Academic Bowl format with teams "buzzing in" with their response. See the following for further information: Agriculture Issues Spring CDE Teams consist of 3 to 7 individuals who actively participate, orally presenting information, and answering judges questions. All participants scores will count toward total team score. Each team will conduct a presentation on a agriculture related issue at the local level. Issue topics should focus on one of the following areas: Environmental issues Agriculture Technology Animal Issues Agriculture Career Issues Economy and Trade Issues Agricultural Policy Issues Food Safety Issues All information used in presentation should be current. Teams will have five minutes to set-up and presentation can be no more than 15 minutes in length. All members of the team maybe asked questions. Scoring: 1. Introduction, Pro, Con, and Summary 2. Overall presentation (participation of each member of the team, quality and power of the presentation, creativity, and stage presence) 3. Questions The following is the score sheet for the Agriculture Issues CDE: SC Ag Issues Scorecard Job Interview CDE FFA Member will submit cover letter, resume', and form for judging during contest. Participants should bring the following supplies with them to the contest: writing utensils, resume, list of references, blank paper, cover letter, and business cards Activities judged at the contest: Cover Letter (100 points) - should be one page, Times New Roman 12 font, single spaced, block justified, addressed to Superintendent of Career Development Events Resume' (150 points) - One single spaced white sheet of paper, single sided, not to exceed 2 pages, based on real information, submit three letters of reference. Application (50 points) - complete standard job application Personal Interview (450 points) - interview with panel of judges, last about 20 minutes Follow Up Letter (100 points) - participant will have to submit a follow up letter after the round of interviews, computer with word processing software will be available to type follow up letter, 30 minutes are available for activity, letter is to be addressed to the Superintendent of the Career Development Event and should be a response to their interview Greenhand Creed Speaking Spring CDE during Public Speaking CDE Individual competition First year FFA Members in the 9th grade Individuals memorize the FFA Creed and present it to a panel of judges in less than four minutes. The presentation should start with "The FFA Creed by E.M. Tiffany" and end with "that inspiring task. Thank you" After the presentation of the Creed, judges ask 3 to 5 questions.
