Montessori got its start in District 55 in 1995.  Teacher training and plans to implement classes were put into place.

In 1996, Montessori classes were offered to three, four, and five-year-olds in one class at Hickory Tavern School, and three classes at Laurens Pirmary School, later renamed Laurens Elementary School.

 

Montessori classes are currently offered at all elementary schools and two middle schools. 

Serving approximately 1000 students in pre-school through middle school, District 55 is currently home to the largest public school Montessori program in South Carolina.

 

The district is recognized throughout South Carolina as a leaders in brining the effective and proven Montessori system of teaching and learning to the public schools in the state.
